Vehicles Linked to Two Accounts Should Only Be Inactivated on Triggering Account
Current Behavior: When a vehicle (plate) is linked to more than one user account—such as in the case of student couples sharing a car—and one user marks the vehicle as inactive, the system currently reflects that status across all linked accounts. This results in the vehicle being marked as inactive even if the second user did not update or intend to inactivate it. On the handheld, enforcement sees a green checkmark (indicating a permit is present) alongside a red dot (indicating the vehicle is inactive), which can cause confusion during enforcement.
Impact: This situation creates inconsistencies in enforcement visibility. Officers may overlook vehicles that should be flagged because inactive vehicles do not trigger a violation, even though a permit may still technically be valid. It also causes frustration when accounts are unintentionally affected by another user’s updates.
Suggested Improvement:
- Change the system behavior so that inactivating a vehicle only affects the specific user account where the change was made, not all linked accounts.
- Additionally, improve the handheld visual indicators by adding a third status icon (e.g., a purple checkmark or a question mark) to clearly show:
- A permit may be associated to the user
- But the vehicle is not active on any permit
Benefit: This would make enforcement clearer, reduce confusion caused by red-dot/green-check mismatches, and avoid penalizing users due to another user’s account activity. It would also help enforcement officers quickly identify scenarios where the permit setup needs review (e.g., an incorrect or outdated vehicle is in use).
